Technology Karma

I've obviously enraged the technology gods. My computer is now wheezing and gasping, and after spending three days on the phone with Apple, I've been told to take my baby to the hospital.

It's not like I'm on deadline or anything!

Anyone recommend some incense I can burn? Chants? Sacrifices? Please, just make it stop!

All I know is that I'm staying away to prevent infection of bad luck.

Yikes! :( It's been a long time since I felt comfortable popping the top off a CPU and poking around; I have a husband who does that for a living so I let him worry about the innards these days.

All I can recommend is a good back-up -- a laptop or a second desktop or whatever, and a flash drive with a frequently updated Writing folder. (Plus anything else you'd really hate to lose. It might take more than one flash drive, but they're cheap.) That way, even if your primary system loses its smoke, you're covered.

For now, though, all I can do is hope the computer hospital is quick and that nothing's lost permanently. Good luck, hon!

Candice, you have my deepest sympathy - may you rest in peace.

The bane of my life these past 10 years has been the dissonance between what my computers should be able to do, and what they actually do. And MacGillicuddy's Corollary of Murphy’s Law dictates that they WILL let you down and ‘at the worst possible time’, as appears to be happening as we speak for yourself.

Do you have another computer you can use? If so, you can download the files relevant to your deadline onto a flash drive before you take it to the repair shop and then work on your ms. on the other computer. Caution: test first. My husband has had trouble with some brands of drives being recognized by some Macs but not others.
