Synopses for Pantsers
I received some great answers to the question I posed last Thursday, so if you haven't read the comments on that entry, do. Steve Malley contributed a great riff on what a synopsis should do. It's one of the reasons the things are so scary--they are so important.
One of the reasons I asked this question is that in a few months I'm going to be teaching an all-day writing workshop. I am trying to be sensitive to the differences in the way people write and to suggest alternatives, so I appreciate everyone's input.

Yes, good luck with the workshop, though I'm it won't be needed. I think most writers and would-be writers concur these days with the approach you are taking.
Nothing is more off-putting than a workshop where some unknown, self-appointed guru tells people "how to" when he has no decent track record of his own to back it up.
All that needs to be told, really, is what has worked for the speaker and what might also work for others. Beyond that it can be mentioned, as you suggest, that other people have successfully used alternative methods.
Based on what I've read here, I'll bet your workshops are really fabulous.
